I am a passionate Canadian, British Columbian and Vancouver Islander who will strive to make our home a place where social justice prevails, the natural environment is protected and we all have the opportunity to pursue our dreams while leading safe, productive lives.

Born and raised in Greater Victoria, I spent twenty years working all across our amazing province as a forest firefighter. I understand that there is no higher duty for a government than to protect the land and the people that it serves.

I believe that a healthy environment and a healthy economy not only can, but must, go hand in hand, and that governments have an obligation to be both morally and fiscally accountable to their citizens. At a time when politics seems to be driving more and more people apart across the globe, I truly believe that we all need to work together solve the problems we face, and make British Columbia, and the world, a better place for future generations.

I hope that the residents of Langford-Juan de Fuca will allow me the opportunity and honour to serve them as their MLA for the next four years.

Brendan Ralfs was born into a fourth generation Victoria area family, and has spent his entire life as a resident of the Capital Regional District. Raised by his grandparents and mother, politics was always a topic of active discussion around the family dinner table and debate was not only encouraged, it was mandatory. Swimming, water-skiing, rowing and karate kept him moving while he graduated from Mount Douglas High School in a French Immersion program; and from there he continued on to study English Literature, Greek and Latin at the University of Victoria, winning several scholarships along the way.

After summer jobs in the fast food industry, on construction sites, and planting trees north of Prince George, Ralfs started work in 1994 as a forest firefighter with the B.C. helicopter rappel program. During the next two decades, he worked in all corners of British Columbia, from Nelson to Fort Nelson, and Watson Lake to southern Vancouver Island. He fought wildfires in several other Canadian provinces, was deployed to Australian bushfires in 2007. Through smoke and flames, Brendan has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of hotter and hotter summers.

In 2015 Ralfs transitioned to work as a provincial emergency manager on southern Vancouver Island, where he has been exposed to an even broader array of weather-influenced emergencies, including floods, storms and drought. He truly understands that we have no more time to waste in the fight against climate change.

Outside of his career, Ralfs also worked part-time from 2000 to 2005 in Port Renfrew as a paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service; is an enthusiastic supporter of Greater Victoria’s arts & culture community; and has been fortunate to remain active his entire life with martial arts and yoga. He is also a dedicated international traveler, and has visited Europe, Southeast Asia, India, East Africa, Southern Africa, China, the Middle East and Russia in the last decade.

Ralfs discovered the vastness of BC from a firefighting helicopter, and has never lost his wonder at its beauty or the desire to protect and preserve it. He is honoured to have accepted the nomination as the B.C. Green Party candidate in Langford-Juan de Fuca, and looks forward to the opportunity to serve his province once again.
